Aging Skin
EXFOLIANTS, PEELS AND ALTERNATIVES
- Actual removal of skin
Exfoliants are preparations for the skin that have a certain degree of abrasiveness. They physically remove the rough, dry outers layers of skin to give it a smoother look. While they do not produce permanent change, they stimulate regeneration of the skin's outer layers.
A peel is the chemical removal of a layer or layers of skin. The new tissue has fewer irregularities of texture and colour than the original. The procedure involves the application of a chemical agent which causes the skin to peel, much as it would with a sunburn. Peels may be light, medium or deep depending on the chemical used, how strong it is, and how long it is left on the skin. Recovery time varies depending on the depth of the peel.
