HYDROXY ACIDS
- Smoothing exfoliants

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), the so-called "fruit acids", are found in sugar cane, milk and many root vegetables. They were first used as moisturizers, but have also been found to promote the shedding and regeneration of the skin's outer layer. Regular use of AHAs results in softer, clearer skin. The concentration of AHA in a product is important. Low concentration will have little effect on the skin, while too much may cause irritation.

Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are less commonly used but they have a similar effect as AHAs.

Poly hydroxy acids (PHAs) are known for their natural gentleness to the skin as well as their moisturizing and antioxidant effects.

Also, there are antioxidants such as vitamin C, which act in the same way as AHAs and, depending on the strength, can also be effective. Other antioxidants include vitamin E (tocopherol) and betacarotene.
