First Derma Membrane Structure technology to treat dry skin in Canada mimics human skin moisture barrier that regulates water loss

IMPRŪV™ CREAM IS NOW AVAILABLE IN CANADA

MONTREAL, Quebec - October 5, 2004 — A leader in dermatology, Stiefel Canada Inc., announces that IMPRŪV™ Cream is now available in Canada. IMPRŪV™ is the first Canadian skin therapy to use a new patented high pressure technology that combines plant-based lipids similar to those found in the human skin. This unique biocompatible formulation restructures the skin's damaged moisture barrier to reduce moisture loss, and replenishes the skin's lipid content for fast relief of dry skin and long lasting hydration.

Skin is the body's largest living organ and like all living things it needs water to stay healthy. Dry skin is a frequent problem in dermatology especially during the winter and IMPRŪV can help minimize the skin's water loss.

Dry skin is a sign that the epidermis, especially of the stratum corneum, is not working.1 The stratum corneum, which contains a resilient structural framework of lipids, has a 'barrier function' designed to help protect the effects of external substances such as detergents. It also helps regulate normal body water loss through evaporation called trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL).

New generation strategy for dry skin care

Possible approaches for treating the skin's inability to regulate TEWL include:

  • Replenishment - adding water or lipids to the skin's surface
  • Sealing - providing an artificial barrier to retain the body's water
  • Restoration - of lipids in the intercellular membrane to restore the integrity of the barrier function

IMPRŪV's unique Derma Membrane Structure, like the stratum corneum, allows ingredients to penetrate and rebuild the damaged intercellular membrane. This new generation strategy for dry skin care resembles the body's biological function in regulating TEWL.

Ideal for all ages, including children

Since IMPRŪV is hypoallergenic and will not clog pores it is ideal for treating dry skin related to medical conditions such as atopic dermatitis. A common skin disease, atopic dermatitis affects about 10 per cent of infants and children.2 While the exact cause is not known, atopic dermatitis results from a combination of family heredity and a variety of conditions in everyday life that trigger the red, itchy rash.

"We are very excited about introducing IMPRŪV™ cream in Canadian pharmacies," explained Pierre Boucher, Vice President, Marketing and Sales at Stiefel Canada. "The product was launched in Europe and Asia with great success, confirming the effectiveness of this new-generation approach to dry skin therapy."
